It was Welsh Dragon Ryan Jenkins who was victorious. Jenkins got the better of Dean Cundy, Emran Hussain, Euan Liddle, Hubert Noah and Gareth Herbert. The final with Herbert ended in a pulsating 11-5 in the fifth victory. The hit TV Series Heroes has a character called "Denko". Ryan Jenko's rhyming namesake terminates other heroes in this hit BBC programme. This was at least before he was himself terminated and in fact evaporated by another character "Tracy Strauss". Unfortunately, no other super league heroes were as fortunate as Miss Strauss and Jenkins proceeded to the top prize unscathed and unevaporated. Jenkins and Herbert put on a great table tennis spectacle, with Jenkins backhand loop coming up trumps.

Ilford’s Matthew Spero was the surprise Winner of the Open Singles at the 2010 Essex Closed Table TennisTournament played at BATTS in Harlow over the weekend of Saturday/Sunday 02/03 January.
Although this event will not make the same amount of headlines as some minor match at Old Trafford on the same day it represented a fantastic success for the hard-hitting left-handed Spero (ranked no. 155 nationally) who got the
better of England no. 48 Ashley Stokes in the Final 6-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 with a superbly executed display of controlled hitting.
In an evenly contested event the first big shock took place in the group stages when Ilford Veteran defender John Tendler beat no. two seed Ashley Stokes (BATTS) in four ends which relegated Ashley to second place in his group. Ashley’s “punishment” was a first round meeting against the holder Umair Mauthoor (Ilford) and in a fast and at times breath-taking encounter Ashley edged home 11-9, 11-13, 11-7, 11-13, 11-9.

At a glittering awards ceremony at Tattersalls in Newmarket last night, when the likes of Brawn GP won the team of the year title, Henry Cecil picked up a lifetime achievement award, and Charlotte Edwards from the Ashes winning England Team picked up the Sports personality Award, little BATTS from Old Harlow collected the Community Club of the Year award .
So we're top community club in the 7 counties that make up the BBC EAST region and it will be covered this evening on BBC EAST TV. See their website from around 9.30 this morning for pictures and more details.
So a special night and a tribute to the ever growing band of volunteers at BATTS .............but today it's back to mopping the floors in the sports hall !
Round five of the British League Premier Division has been completed and the leaders Drumchapel Glasgow have all but guaranteed that they will retain their title. It is early days but such was the margin of their superiority over second –placed Westfield that it is surely no more than a formality that they will win it again.
Westfield, the surprise-package of the first weekend were missing Niall Cameron and they were never really in the hunt. Ryan Jenkins, Qian Hai Song, Terry Young and Stephen Jenkins carried all before them, running out 8-0 winners. Damien Nicholls matched Ryan Jenkins for the first four games, but he couldn’t maintain the pace in the fifth end and Ryan ran out a 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-4 winner. Stylish newcomer Wilson Huart faced a “baptism of fire”, and although he showed some nice touches, he wasn’t able to add to his side’s successes. Wilson lost 8-11, 10-12, 4-11 against Terry Young and 3-11, 2-11, 12-10, 7-11 to Stephen Jenkins.
